Day #5 Monday, August 17: Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio

We awoke right where we’d gone to sleep: in Jefferson City; an almost shy-about-being-the-capital city. But of course St. Louis lets you know who she is by spanning her girth with that huge arch. Looking at it shining in the hot and humid summer sun, I thought, there must be a story here!

Leaving St. Louis, we followed the meandering highway through the countryside and small towns. The usual sight of road-kill started showing up. But now I rubbed my eyes. Could it be? Nah. No.. it was: an armadillo! In Missouri? And there it was again, and again. I couldn’t help but think of the armadillo groom’s cake in Steel Magnolias.

I really like Missouri. And as we wound our way up and down and around this lush, green hilly country, there was something very congruous about hearing the current CD selection from O Brother Where Art Thou: Oh bear me away on the snow white wings, to my immortal home!

Illinois. This is a flat sate… and everyone follows the speed limit! They don’t even like to pass you! Emma and I smiled as we came upon the town of Effinton (I’ll bet that town has come into its own!).

Indiana. Kind of like Illinois; except you pronounce the last letter. But we did drive through Indianapolis and found a throw-back drive-in that offered their own homemade root beer.

Finally we arrived in Ohio… Centerville, where my sister Dianne and her husband Harry live.

Ohio sounds like a very plain place … but it’s not! Their neighborhood is laid out so all they see are each other, and yet they are surrounded within walking distance on their perimeter by any services they need. It is hot and humid, and green and lush, and there are a lot of insects that bit and make noise!
